Heathfield started slowly and that, combined with a series of good moves from the Edenbridge backs, meant that Heathfield spent the first 10 minutes defending resolutely with good try saving tackles from Tom Faulkner-Bryant, Sam Cooley and Pat Fitzgerald. This allowed Heathfield to weather the early pressure without giving away a score.
On 12 minutes a good break by Mike Barber, Mike Jaques and Kenny Lewis almost resulted in a try with Kenny Lewis being tackled into touch 2 metres out. Lineout, scrum and a series of rucks followed allowing Mike Jaques to snipe through to score a try, well converted by Kenny Lewis.
Heathfield then began to dominate all phases of play but it was Edenbridge that scored next. A quick break off the base of the scrum saw the Edenbridge scrum-half cover 30 metres until the move was stopped on the Heathfield tryline. However Edenbridge had the momentum and scored a converted try after a series of tryline rucks.
This appeared to be the signal for Heathfield to let loose and excellent forward play in the lineout, scrum and loose allowed the Heathfield backs to display their full repertoire of moves and pressure the Edenbridge line. Kenny Lewis ran a perfect line off a ruck to score almost unopposed close to the posts. He failed, however, to convert his own try.
Heathfield maintained the momentum and kept pressuring the Edenbridge scrum which allowed Tom Faulkner-Bryant to pick and drive from the base of a scrum, carrying a couple of Edenbridge players over with him to score a well taken try.
The second half started with Heathfield making a number of changes. This seemed to upset their rhythm a little as Heathfield lost the momentum of the first half. This coincided with the Edenbridge forwards raising their game and a good period of thrust and counter thrust followed with neither team able to break the deadlock.
Heathfield again began to gain dominance after about 20 minutes with good breaks from Brady Burdett, Julian Wates and Warren Harris but dropped passes and good defence let a number of good opportunities slip by.
With 5 minutes to go, Heathfield were awarded a penalty 10 metres out which was taken quickly only for the referee to call the move back. Heathfield re-took the penalty with a tap to Tom Faulkner-Bryant whose direct running and low body angle saw him break through the covering tackles to score under the posts. Kenny Lewis converted to post the final score of Heathfield 24, Edenbridge 2's 7.
Both Sam Cooley and Tom Faulkner-Byant played extremely well however the Man of the Match award went to Kenny Lewis (just!) for his overall play.
