U14s narrowly lose to Haywards Heath in league game full of passion and skill
The weather was warm as the U14s challenged Haywards Heath in front of a large and vocal crowd. After a heavy defeat the Heathfield squad wanted to show how much they have improved this season.
The first 5 mins confirmed that the team now consistently start well. Though after this initial surge it was the visitors that score the first two tries and taking a 12-0 lead. Step forward the pack. With excellent rucking and recycling the ball they surged up the pitch finally releasing Captain Tooke to score our first try.
From the restart the visitors once again turned to their two strong centres and scored almost immediately.
Now it was the turn of the backs. On a good platform from the forwards the backs released Hector who dived over in front of a full club house.
The half ended with another HH try with the visitors leading 22-10.
Half time saw the introduction of the first of our finishers. The first 6 mins of the second half showed some real skill and intensity as the team started to turn the tide. The first score of the second half again came from our powerful forwards with Jack L crashing over. The team were now in full flow as they released Hector to score his second try of the game, excellently converted by Ben. Our purple patch of 10 mins was then completed by a try from Finn who had an excellent first game at No 10. The team now led 27-22
Now came the response from HH with two tries within 3 mins.
The drama was not over yet as in the last play of the game the team stormed the opposition try line. The team decision to attack short worked for the first couple of plays but eventually faltered as we just failed to cross the white wash as the referee blew the final whistle.
