Lewes clinch very competitive game
Heathfield let first half advantage slip in very close game at Lewes
Lewes vs Heathfield - 8th Jan 2017
The 2nd phase of this seasons Waterfall Championship saw us away at Lewes.
Lewes caught us on the hop in the first few minutes with an early try putting them 5 points ahead. However after that the Heathfield players found their form, starting with some formidable tackling within our own 22 for some time but never letting Lewes capitalise on their position and then advancing on Lewes with a strong attacking line, moving the ball through the backs and eventually breaking through with a try on the wing by Will Cutler to make it 5 - 5.
Despite the considerable size and weight advantage Lewes had in the pack, Heathfield continued to hold their own in both the scrums and rucks, regularly winning the ball and thus maintaining control. Some good defensive kicking by Will Chambers and good strong tackling by some of our more seasoned players stopped Lewes from gaining any further advantage.
Heathfield then went ahead with two further tries scored by new boy Regan Law breaking their defensive line at the 22 to force his way over to score, followed by a great intercept not long after the restart by Will Barrett to then run from the half way line to score our 3rd. Lewes then countered with try just before half time leaving the score at 10 - 15 to Heathfield.
The second half saw Lewes dig deep and come back at us hard eventually scoring 2 tries in quick succession to put them 20 - 15 ahead. Heathfield then managed to counter with a move from out No. 8 Regan, off the back of the scrum, breaking their line and then popping it out to Jack Pincus to score in the far corner putting us back in contention at 20 - 20.
Unfortunately, despite continued pressure from Heathfield, Lewes managed to secure two more tries to put them in a winning position and then dug their heals in to maintain their position. The final score being 30 - 20 to Lewes. However I don't believe the score truly reflects the match with Heathfield clearly in control for the majority of the game.
Well done Heathfield U13s in what was a great game of rugby. Our next competitive match is against Pulborough on the 15th Jan at home.
