U8's off to Sussex Finals again !
Last Sunday saw our first competitive festival of the year and it was clear from the get go, both teams were up for playing some outstanding rugby!!
The Hurricanes' first game proved that even our young, naive and innocent 8yr olds can sometimes suffer from tummy butterflies; as nerves caused a couple of dropped balls and disallowed tries. However, thanks to some inspirational leadership from a young Caden, the lads managed to gather themselves together and come out with a draw.
The next game delivered a real statement of intent from the team delivering an emphatic 9-1 victory. Game number 3 provided it's spectators with what will be a strong contender for try of the season...... East Grinstead were on the attack and looking like scoring, until a wayward pass resulted in a loose ball bobbling chaotically around the ground. Queue an unbelievable pick by Connor Keeley who then managed to juggle the ball for a metre or two before he nestled it under an armpit and then scaled 3 quarters of the pitch before touching down!! The Hurricanes then managed to seal victory in game 4 thanks to a hat trick from Oscar. This then lead them to the final and a showdown with their squad mates, the Spitfires.
The Spitfires first game was very similar with first Match nerves with a couple of knock ons and dropped catches leading Crowborough to take the advantage with the turnover ball and gain momentum with a couple of Tries ahead but a valiant and passion come back saw some terrific defence and a couple of Tries as well as a bit of a battering for Elliot but clawed back a 5-5 draw against what was to be our Festival Rivals. Some superb pressure and tagging then saw the team causing havoc for the opposition and rewarded them with several Tag tunovers giving them the advantage and a solid 7-4 win against Uckfield. The fitness of the team showed and in the last match against East Grinstead proved decisive with an 11-4 victory. We've seen awesome tagging before from this group but they turned over the other teams so many times by consistent tagging and kept a clean sheet themselves. The work rate and drive from captain Sam through to players Adam, Herbie, Elliot, Finlay and new comers to Festivals Bertie and Olivier was inspirational and meant that they won their group on Try difference by 5 tries ahead of Crowborough. So a final showdown with The Hurricanes for the second year in a row was on the cards. This was a bit of an exhibition match and the coaches just let the kids play and enjoy themselves. The U8's are now off to the Sussex Minis Finals for the second year in a row which will be held at Chichester on 3rd April. Their opponents will be Chichester, Hove, Eastbourne & Hastings. Good luck boys :)
