Lewes Festival Match Report

Great Day yesterday

The Sun shone and the conditions were fantastic and the Players put in a performance which befitted a perfect day for Rugby,

So we were in a single group with Lewes, Eastbourne Uckfield and East Grinstead, We had a big pitch in excellent condition which was going to suite an open flowing game but also test the fitness of the players as they will need to do a lot of running

First up was a tough one against East Ginstead, which given our tendency to start slow was a worry for the coaching team. Obviously the players weren't worried and it showed in their performance as they ran in 4 tries to totally dominate the game and start the festival with a clean sheet.

Second we were up against Eastbourne, who had their normal crop of fast big players but the squad matched them every step of the way, both teams came very close to scoring with Theo coming up inch's short after one charge and Eastbourne getting over the line but being held up by great defence by the Hurricanes. It all came down to the last play of the game where Eastbourne attacking the Hurricanes line managed to drive under a couple of tackles and score a try. The Ref blew for time once they scored so it was the last play and he was playing till the ball went dead so it couldn't get closer.

Third game we were up against our neighbours Uckfield, who being down on numbers had a couple of Hurricanes playing for them to make up the numbers. We started really well and were two tries up in the first two mins and didn't look back running out as easy winners ( 4 Nil I think )

Last and final game was up against good Lewes side who on their performances in previous games were going to give us a big test, as it turned out we just didn't let them, we played, as we had all day controlled, disciplined rugby and ran in 4 tiers ( I think ) and ended up 4-1 winners.

So we finished the festival as very very close runners up having played some great rugby during the day. The players worked incredibly hard and rightly got the plaudits from the parents and coaches alike.

I don't normally pick out individuals from the team performance but this week will be an exception,

Firstly, well done to Sam Mc and Billy for agreeing to go over and help out Uckfield, They played three games for them and got lots of praise from the Uckfield Coach for their performances, well done guys

Secondly, well done to the forwards yesterday, we only had 6 Forwards in the squad yesterday and they worked so hard, I think its fair to say that they were the best scrummages on the day even up against physically much bigger packs and their tackling and rucking was fantastic, well done boys.

Thirdly, Well done to a Ellen, she wasn't feeling great on the day and was unsure if she could play but she was big part of the above pack which gave so many other teams a hard time in the scrummage and to cap it all she picked a ball at a ruck near the halfway line and ran in a try, out sprinting the defending sides full back, well done Ellen.

Forth, great team performance overall, it was great to see the players communicating and supporting each other a great team performance on the day.

Finally I want to say a big thanks to all the parents and fellow coaches for all the support yesterday.
