Crowborough 3s 12 v Heathfield 3s 54
Heathfield 3rds make cup semi final.
Heathfield turned up at Crowborough not knowing what to expect.
The game was to be played on a lower sloping pitch which to be fair had put up well against all the rain we have had lately.
Heathfield started the stronger and pinned Crowborough in their own 22 for the first 10 minutes. After some silly handling errors from both teams Heathfield won their own scrum shipped the ball wide for Brady Burdett to throw his trade mark dummy and score under the posts. Skinner converted. 0-7.
Heathfield kept up the pressure and soon won a penalty just outside the 22. They elected to kick, but Skinner put it just wide.
Time for heathfield to switch off and let Crowborough have the ball. With the pitch being narrow and the opposition fielding a large pack it was obvious what their tactics were. Win the ball and rumble up the middle. This they did well. Heathfield missed some tackles and lacked support, Crowborough bullied their way over the line to score a converted try. 7-7
Heathfield rallied and stepped up a gear, good play in the loose was rewarded when the ball was popped to Oli Goldsworthy who sprinted his way from the half way line to evade several tackles and score under the posts, Skinner duly converted 7-14
The next score came when Ian Schleider shared a good interchange with Tim Evans, passing wide to Paddy O’hara who chose to punt ahead, Alex Borg chased the kick and chipped the ball through to dive on and score in the corner. Skinner slotted a difficult conversion. 7-21
Heathfield again switched off and Crowborough took advantage scoring an unconverted try under the posts. 12-21
The half time talk was about doing the simple things well and calming down.
Heathfield started the second half strongly, Tim Evans made good yards to get the ball to Matt Skinner who carried well and scored under the posts converting his own try. 12-28
The next was a deserved second try for Alex Borg who had hooked well all game and made himself known to most of the opposition. 12-33
Heathfield added to the score, this time through the backs who were now finding more space. Oli Goldsworthy took the ball at pace and got within 5 metres, good support from Matt Overy saw him collect a pop from Oli to run in under the posts. Skinner converted. 12-40
The game was getting niggly, and this led to a small hand bag incident between the two hookers. The ref who was having a good game felt a yellow for both offenders was his only option.
Heathfield carried on and saw Paddy O’hara run across the pitch to score near the posts. Skinner again converted. 12-47
Heathfield saved the best til last, Jack Bayley made good ground with a typical evasive run, the ball was recycled and up stepped the captain Ian Schlieder. He found himself in some space and made a dash for the line. Overcome with excitement he attempted a swallowdive, this was one of those moments when you really had to be there. (see Pictures) Skinner converted to seal a good victory. 12-54
Heathfield won this game well, but have to learn to not be complacent, and keep their concentration for the full 80 minutes.
Tim Evans returned after injury and was strong all game, No 8 Ian Schlieder combined well with scrum half Jack Bayley and Matt Skinner had an excellent game. A special mention has to go to Oli Goldworthy for his great running but man of the match this week has to go to Alex Borg stepping in at hooker, scoring two tries and showing passion for the game.
