Heathfield 3's outpaced by young East Grinstead side

New recruits make important contributions

East Grinstead II 55 Heathfield III 10
East Grinstead were the worthy winners of this Sussex Vase preliminary round as their young side had far too much pace and skill in their backs for the willing but mostly inexperienced visitors.
Several members of the Heathfield pack are the ‘wrong’ side of 40 while all of the home team looked to be under 30. East Grinstead are in the process of rebuilding their club after a difficult period: some of their teams are playing well below their proper level and it will take a season or so for this to be resolved.
Heathfield had the best of the opening minutes with early forward pressure into the home half leading to two penalty chances, one of which was duly taken by Paddy O’Hara (0-3). However the home team soon realised that their back division had a clear edge. Tries came steadily thereafter and the half time score was 27-3.
Four more converted tries followed in the second half (55-3) but Heathfield refused to give up and the pack in particular took the game to the home side in the last ten minutes. Progressive attacks finally produced a consolation try as Bruno Hallit, who had moved from centre to number 8, crashed over from short range behind a dominant scrum (55-10).
Hallit was one of ten players in the Heathfield match-day squad of 18 who have been recruited through the current RFU ‘Return To Rugby’ program in which Heathfield are involved. Heathfield captain Kenny Lewis was delighted with their contributions on the day and results will soon come.
The 3rd team trains on Thursday evening together with the ‘Return To Rugby’ squad – everyone welcome.
This Saturday (19 Nov 2.30) Heathfield’s 1st team visit Horsham for their next London SE2 league match.
