Mothers' day Mayhem

Heathfield and Waldron RFC vs East Grinstead RFC
It was the second time that these two teams had played each other this season, the first (friendly) ending in a tight Heathfield victory. East Grinstead came out looking for revenge in the waterfall match. The game started at a frantic pace with both sides running the ball from all over the pitch. But Heathfield won the kicking battle in the first half and as a result gained field position and put pressure on East Grinstead. The deadlock was broken by Joe who ran around the outside and scored in the corner. The backs continued to work well off some quick ball from the forwards and the second try came of a scrum and we got the ball quickly down the line and although we got stopped just short of the line, Will picked up and dived over to make the score 10-0 to Heathfield. We made our tackles with Joe and Will leading the way in chopping down their big players. A quick lapse in concentration and East Grinstead got one back, 10-5. All through the game East Grinstead were predictable and repeated got picked off by the backs intercepting passes and Joe got his second by nicking a ball virtually passed to him by their fly-half. That made the half-time score 15-5 to the visitors.
The half-time talk about not going to sleep turned out to be well founded as East Grinstead (Cheered on by some of their younger club year-groups) came roaring back through some busting tries by their forwards and break-away tries by one of their backs that turned out to be playing up a year. Despite some good runs from Piers and yet another try from Joe East Grinstead kept coming and the scores were equal going into the last play. It all got a bit heated towards the finish with players getting tripped off-the-ball and the odd shove going on now and then. Unfortunately, East Grinstead scored a controversial try in the last play with their winger running 90% of the pitch. The main reason for their win was probably fitness with their big bench they kept rotating their team whereas we couldn’t. As a result we suffered in the second half and they won. But there were lots of positive things to take from this weekend
