Heathfield Ladies 31 Pulborough Ladies 5
Heathfield Ladies continued their impressive first season in an RFU league with a convincing five try win over Pulborough Ladies.
The result was based on the solid foundation of the forwards who often carried the ball well before releasing the backs with Isobelle Eyres in the forwards and Hannah Osborne in the backs receiving particular praise from the coaches. There was also special mention of Hannah Davis who is making the switch from front row to outside centre to notable effect.
Emily Sowell touched down after ten minutes but Pulborough charged back to pressure the home team. Soon the ref marched Heathfield back for alleged backchat and the visitors collected their only score on the day from a quickly taken tap to tie the score at 5-5.
Heather Jury added one try before half time to leave the game nicely in the balance at 10-5.
The visitors had limited numbers in their squad and injuries meant that both sides played with a reducing number of players on each side in accordance with league regulations. Increasing possession meant that Heathfield collected three more tries. Davis scored one and a high tackle on her near the try line resulted in a penalty try. Sowell scored her second on the day as good hands moved the ball across the pitch before she beat several defenders from at least thirty metres out.
Skipper Carla Monson converted two of the tries.
Heathfield are now top of their league which is remarkable given the relative inexperience of the squad. However we have not reached half way through the league programme and there are plenty of away games to come in the New Year. Next Sunday Heathfield next entertain Cranbrook Ladies (10 Dec 2.00pm).
