Heathfield Colts travelled to Crowborough for their season opener for a friendly / training match in glorious summer sunshine fielding only 16 players with a number unavailable due to school commitments.
Dean Pennell was in the squad for a quick match, back on leave for 2 weeks after successfully completing his initial 6 month army training camp. Well done Deano!
Crowborough kicked off but the early exchanges all went Heathfield's way with debutant Harry Sperring at fly-half scoring an early solo try which he converted.
Shortly after that Gareth Lloyd at openside (yes... OPENSIDE!) crashed through close in to score under the posts. Gareth also converted his own try.
Jack Koops also scored, running a classic Jack line to cut through the Crowborough defence and also score close to the posts. Unfortunately Jack just missed his conversion.
In the Second half, and with most of the players flagging a bit in the heat, Heathfield scored their final try with great straight running from Sperring (now playing at inside centre) and Fergus Diplock bursting through the defence to score. By the way, yes, its THAT Fergus Diplock!!!
The score really didn't do that much justice to Crowborough who competed well all match and crossed the line 3 times only to be held up by fantastic Heathfield defending on each occasion.
The match was refereed excellently and the Heathfield players and parents were exceptionally well entertained both before and after the match in Crowborough's fantastic new clubhouse.
It was also very good to see Lewis Golding playing and hopefully he will decide to stay with Heathfield for our last season as juniors.
Final Score: Heathfield 26 v 0 Crowborough.
