Perfect conditions and 2 well matched teams, who have known each other since minis, made this a great spectacle for the neutral. The game moved from end to end and defence was excellent from both teams. HH tried to use their size advantage in the forwards but strong tackling and rucking from the hurricanes stopped them and turned over a good number of opposition balls. The set pieces went with the owners and after an exhilarating 20 minutes, a missed tackle let HH in for a try. The hurricanes came back strongly and a beautifully worked back row try off a scrum, with a perfectly timed pop up of the scrum half, brought the scores back to 5-5 at the end of the first half.
The second half saw Heathfield come out stronger and put real pressure on the HH line. This unfortunately did not result in points as the last pass just would not go to hand. The positional kicking was absolutely top drawer and helped keep us camped in their half. The Hurricanes lost some of their composure at this stage and a few wild passes and missed tackles put us under pressure. HH capitalised on this and pushed us back. A few mistakes from tired bodies let HH score breakaway tries and the game finished with 4 tries to 1, which really does not reflect what a close contest this was.
Always disappointing to lose, especially when we dominated for much of the game, but the boys all left the field feeling that we know how to beat HH next time out.
Bring on Hove!
