Heathfield in fine away win in warmup game

3 years ago By Philip Bell

Long distance and small squad do not prevent an excellent performance

Head Coach David Cook says:
The Heathfield squad travelled away to Sudbury in Suffolk for their 2nd warm up game of the season.
After a 2hour plus journey and with only 17 players, this was destined to be a tough day for the squad against the newly promoted London North East 2 opposition.
However on a perfect day for rugby, at a club with excellent facilities, Heathfield took the game to the opposition from the start. With the match played over 4 quarters, Sudbury were able to rotate their players and give everyone good game time. Heathfield did the same but with fewer interchanges available.
Each session was extremely competitive, but the Heathfield forward power was a telling factor. With a front five of Smith, Cooley, Goatcher, Eames and Koops, it was going to take some moving.
The Sudbury backs were young and fast, but generally kept under control by the Heathfield pressure and scramble defence.
Experience was the overriding factor, with HWRFC capitalising on loose ball and power and pace getting behind the gain line. There were some quality finishes by Clewley, Robertshaw and Smith ( from a line out).. hard lines by Koops, Eames, Maliki and Stables, and great defence by Walker, Bayly, Sandford, Byrne and the Parker Brothers.
Jones and May provided some deft passing, none better than Jones' supplying the offload for Robertshaw's try..
Final score 24-38 win and the Heathfield team knew they had been in a game... despite the journey the boys enjoyed return trip and the game and great Hospitality was more than appreciated.
2nd's and 3rd's next week, competition for places now guys!!

Sudbury have posted a very decent photo albumat
