Mother's day was blessed with glorious sunshine which was tempered by a biting wind.
Uckfield joined us for a our contribution for the Junior day of rugby.
Passion is always on display when these two clubs meet and today was no different. Both teams blasted into the game which for the the first 10 mins was even. Unfortunatley by then we had lost our new Captain, Jasper. The good news we heard later was that Jasper had not broken his wrist. Tom Reilly stepped into his shoes as captain. Uckfield then pulled away scoring 3 unanswered tries by half time.
With the wind our our backs the second half was more even. Some good rucking helped us gain field position and multiple penalties spurred Ben to take another quick tap that was passed through some great hands that allowed Kieran to crash over in the corner. A great team score that was set up over several plays.
It was a day of poor discipline from both sides with too many unnecessary behaviours and acts. Both coaching teams spent time after the game refreshing the core values of our game, highlighting why discipline can be a real differentiator and why it is so important that you leave any frustration on the pitch.
The coaching team were unanimous in our player of the day. Ellis Wilson was involved often, demonstrating both great attitude at rucks and some powerful runs. Well done Ellis great performance. With too many players walking at various stages of the game the coaching time also single out Jack L, Oli H, Ben W and Dan for never slowing done and being at more breakdowns than anyone else.
Another special mention to Jay who did not look out of place in the back row in his first ever start for HWRFC. Great stuff Jay.
As a squad we look to two weeks to our league re-match where we can make it more of a challenge.
