good line speed and fast hands to move the ball down the line win the day

Hurricanes got this seasons Waterfall Competition off to a winning start on a sunny morning with perfect playing conditions on the main club pitch. Shoreham requested a reduced pitch and team size as they could only field 12 players.
With H&W kicking off, the game started very evenly with good straight running rugby from both teams. Shoreham had a size advantage and made good ground with direct running lines in the centre of the pitch. Good defensive lines and strong tackling turned over the ball and gave Heathfield a good attacking opportunity which they moved the ball quickly across the field, and with nice footwork put Finley Smith in under the posts, which gave him an easy conversion of his own try.
Shoreham responded immediately and reclaimed the ball from the kick off, and allowed them to score in the corner after some poor H&W tackling. Heathfield responded with a score of their own, which was again converted. this heralded the start of a very strong spell for the Hurricanes and they scored 4 unanswered tries, all of which Finley converted. One opportunistic try came from a well-read interception by Regan, another 2 from blistering pace by Tom Sayers which left the Shoreham defence flatfooted. Clever supporting play by the forwards allowed Zak Dunn to take a well timed pass from Tom Sayers and get in under the posts.
Shoreham stepped up[ their game as the game went into the final phases. They used their size to good effect and despite some great tackling and mauling by the Hurricanes they score 2 forwards led close range tries under the posts, which they converted.
This was a strong display by the Hurricanes and the speed of the ball through the backs for Heathfield made a real difference. The Heathfield scrum had a tough day, not helped by the scrum being reduced to 5 man, but they held their own in set pieces and in open play. Fast thinking at the restart from Will Chambers and Harry kept the game in the Shoreham end. Some excellent interpassing and support play in the backs really caused the Shoreham defence problems. The direct running by the forwards, particularly in the second half kept Shoreham on the back foot.
Well done to the team on a great result.
Apologies to the whole squad on the late changes in selection which was unfortunately mandated by the Sussex RFU due to the issues Shoreham had in raising a team.
