The U14s welcomed Windsor for the first game of the season this weekend. The game started at a high tempo with strong running and good tackling from both teams and some clever tactical kicking to make use of open spaces. The wet conditions did lead to a few handling errors on both sides but strong support play and some very direct running got the Hurricanes onto the score board with a well worked try after 10 minutes The H&W scrum struggled against their heavier opposition but great pressure on the opposition scrum half caused Windsor to make mistakes and a good and fast passing phase of play saw the Hurricanes full back score under the posts.
Windsor suffered a few injuries and their heads dropped somewhat. As the second 20 minute period started, the Hurricanes, with fresh legs from substitutions, turned up the pressure. The Heathfield pack was now dominating their opposition at the scrum and the line out. They broke the gain line consistently and the handling in the backs was superb. This led to 4 unanswered tries..
Seven tries unanswered, with 5 of those converted, left the Hurricanes very well deserved winners . The superior fitness, supporting play and discipline in defense, which has been the much of the focus of training in September, really showed through. Very good display from the Hurricanes and a nice way to start the season.
The morning finished up with a Ba-Bas game with the Windsor team. This game was played at real tempo and was well balanced. It was great to see the spirit of rugby in action as the teams quickly gelled and established their playing patterns.
There were lots of very strong performances from our boys on the day, and they really did play as a team. The Player of the day selected by Windsor, was Will Chambers.
Also Happy birthday to Will Cutler and Regan who kindly shared their "Kirsty special" birthday cake in what can only be called a feeding frenzy in the club house.
