On a sunny but cold morning, with a pitch that was struggling from the recent heavy rain, the Hurricanes kicked off their final waterfall pool at Hove. After soaking up some early pressure, including a number of well contested scrums, the Hurricanes, having already stretched Hove with fast and expansive back line moves, scored under the posts with a sublime dummy pass from our out half, who then converted
Hove came back fighting and put the Heathfield line under real pressure. With solid tackling and rucking from both teams, Heathfield defense held firm and drove Hove back repeatedly before an opportunistic interception and full field run by the centres gave us our second try, which was again converted. Hove again came back strongly and a brief loss of concentration allowed them to make a blind side attack off a ruck to score a converted try.
The second half picked up again with the intensity of the first. Hove targeted a number of key attacking players and stifled our style somewhat. A very disciplined performance from the Hurricanes, with excellent pack play meant we kept possession and kept the play in the Hove half of the field. Good ball retention, strong rucking including quite a few turn overs by Heathfield created a number of opportunities. A well worked move across the line almost put our winger under the posts but he was caught and disposed on the try line ( somehow!). Shortly after, off the back of a well secured scrum, another very nice dummy pass allowed our out half to run in under the posts.
This was a strong team performance and the discipline in defense, the strength we introduced off the subs bench and the line speed throughout was very impressive. The team rose above some niggly play by Hove and responded with their play and scores which is exactly what was needed. The family support from the sideline was also pivotal and made a real difference.
Well done Hurricanes!
