The HWRFC U16s welcomed our first team from Kent for the season. With a squad size of 42 it was impressive to see the 22 players make the journey from Sevenoaks into Sussex. The weather was far from welcoming with a biting northerly wind.
This did not deter both squads. Some of the rugby on display was exceptional. It was great to see the willingness to offload the ball and keep attacking whenever possible.
HWRFC U16s are continuing to develop and it was pleasing to see some real leadership on the pitch. Special mention must go to Jack F, Jack L and Dan who were tireless in driving us forward and organising some real structure to the team.
Heathfield scored first with some excellent recycling and a drive the full length of the pitch. After that Sevenoaks started to dominate some of the play scoring tries and one particular excellent conversion from wide out. Both teams scored 4 tries. The Heathfield scorers were John (x2), George and Jack. Indeed the last try from Heathfield on the final whistle had the home coaches purring. With pods in evident the forwards controlled the ball recycling it with confidence, drawing in the defence and then releasing it to the backs whose quick hands found John who finished the overlap with aplomb. Sevenoaks won the game and HWRFC U16s can take to real confidence in the narrow 20-24 loss
