Haywards Heath B 0 Heathfield & Waldron 36

The U15 Greenies put on a good display of teamwork to put six tries into a spirited Haywards Heath team on Sunday. The day was fine, if not a little chilly and there was a moderate wind to take advantage of. Unlike the torrential rain and hurricane the last time they visited!

Early play showed that the home squad were going to be tough, with them getting some early advantage at the breakdown. The Greenies were showing good width with the ball going quickly through the hands where possible.

First try came after the territory had been gained from a long kick and chase from Chester Duff, the try set up by scrum half Tom Taylor linking with Josh Toyn on the right to set Shamus Smith over the line.

The home side then pinned the visitors in their own half for a sustained passage of play, which yielded nothing but showed some resolute defence from the Greenies. Some memorable tackles came in from Chester Duff whose hit impact shipped the ball from the attackers on more than one occasion.

Two further tries came before half time with Josh Toyn getting a well worked winger’s try and Chester Duff at centre intercepting to score under the posts complete with swan dive to celebrate He’ll do well to avoid a tour fine for that.

Half time 0 -17

Three further tries came from the visitors in the second half. The forwards seemed to get some momentum and it was epitomised from a driving run from Jack Baird who seemed to take three defenders with him. Phil Sutton sealed it with and unstoppable pick and go. Outside centre Chester Duff was too strong in the 13 shirt exploiting gaps to get a further two unanswered tries.

Communication looked sharper with calls going from forwards to backs. Henry Paul had some spirited carries from deep setting up a great platform. Defence was there when the team was pushed in the final minutes. Hands were much better with the ball going down the line with some speed. Liam Parsons was immense with his support play always being found in the line as the ball was moving. Pickups from the powerful Greenies scrummage by number eight Miles Geldart went well and are now adding width to the line from a winning scrum. Fitness was good and strength was telling. Team work was evident and infectious.
The Greenies now need to seal the league with an unbeaten run by winning at East Grinstead in a couple of week’s time.
