Rhythm & Clues Success

We had been planning rhythm and clues for months. The tickets had mostly all been sold, the food and drink organised and the hall booked. Flower decorations had been made for all the tables and there was no eventuality that Ruth, Gail and Fiona had not thought of.

By 3.30, the hall was a hive of activity. The tables were being decorated, bunting put up and pencils being sharpened. Ruth, Martin, Gail and Rob (along with any available child) were all working hard. We all pitched in the set up the stage. By 6.00, we had set up all the instruments, PA, lights and speakers, all sound-checked and were ready to pop home for a quick change.

A little after 7.00, people started arriving and taking their seats. Steve Taylor arrived, with quiz in hand and the hall looked stunning. As 7.30 came and went, we started wondering if we were going to be playing to a half-empty hall, but by 8.00 it was full and people were getting seated. The bar had been, and continued to be, a hive of activity and everyone seemed to respond well to the first band ‘Astra’ who played some popular ‘middle of the road’ numbers. They were followed by Jason Laroche, who entertained us all with some mellow songs, while Michael and Karl organised the fish and chips and Andy helped behind the bar. After this delicious feast, it was time for the quiz. Steve did a great job, taxing everybody’s alcohol-soaked brain cells! As the fish and chips were cleared away, we were serenaded by Sean and Andy Best and then it was time for the grand finale – the now named ‘Hex Factor’. Sean, Bryn, myself and Rob (who was still smiling despite being dosed up on painkillers and antibiotics) formed this ‘rugby parents’ band for the sole purpose of fund raising and we soon got people onto the dance floor.

By 11.30, we were all exhausted and glad to hand over to Brady and Andy who bravely ‘volunteered’ to sing ‘Delilah’ completely unrehearsed. They did a great job bringing the evening to an end. The raffle was drawn and everyone helped stack chairs and put away tables. As the hall slowly emptied, we had just 20 minutes to tidy and clear the hall – no mean feet after such a large event. Again, everyone chipped in to help and we were soon clearing the last few bits and pieces away.

The evening was a tremendous success, raising just under £1000 for our end of season tour. This success was due to the sheer hard work that so many people put into it and the great support that we had from friends, family and the rest of the club. We need to say a big thank you to ‘Astra’, who performed free of charge, and to Steve and his wife who gave up their evening to help us.

We hope that those who attended enjoyed themselves and those who organised it are enjoying a well-earned rest.

A big thank you to everybody for making the evening such a success.
