Eight different try scorers - two each for newcomer Katie Baurer and Sophie Saunders

Ashford Ladies 0 Heathfield Ladies 58

Heathfield Ladies collected a ten try to nil away win over Ashford with an assured all-round performance against a larger set of opponents. There may well be harder games to come but this was a confident performance by a side missing several key individuals which bodes well for the rest of the season.
Thankfully the forecast rain stayed away and conditions were good on a dry surface. Initially Heathfield played down the very slight slope and with the breeze but in truth those factors were rarely relevant such was their dominance.
Almost immediately Heathfield skipper Becky Taylor made a turnover and a good run by Brittany Mole was eventually finished by Bethany Wright.
Sophie Saunders then grabbed an unexpected ball out of the side of a scrum and made many yards before being stopped. At the subsequent scrum Heathfield took the ball against the head and the ball was moved wide right for Katie Baurer to mark her first appearance for Heathfield with a well-taken try.
Unlike the Heathfield men’s team on the previous day, this team kept concentration with a clear early lead and Baurer confirmed her earlier promise with a lovely break and nearly collected a brace until hauled down just short but Carla Monson was on hand to finish the move. Monson also converted and went on to succeed with three other kicks.
Saunders then continued her excellent day with a long range solo effort for the bonus point try. The fifth try came just before half time as a result of good work by Wright, Bauer (again) and Monson ending with Watson claiming the points.
At half time the result was pretty clear but the job had to be finished and the coaches were determined to keep concentration levels high. In spite of the home side appearing to have a weight advantage in the scrummage, this phase was generally even with Saskia Sullivan being especially picked out by the referee for her excellent technique.
From the recovered restart Sophia Skinner made a lovely break and overall had a fine day at her unaccustomed position of fly half. The next try came from a big carry by Amber Lovick and Baurer was on hand to collect her second try.
Katie Statham now came off the bench and moved to the second row in place of Alex Young. There can’t be many smaller players in that position but she always plays above her weight.
Saunders continued her fine day with a good finish from a set scrum. Then Monson terrorised her opponents from another scrum and was unlucky not to gain any reward. However soon afterwards Taylor made no mistake picking up at the base of a scrum ten yards out for a clinical finish. Then tiring Ashford legs were stretched too far by good handling through many hands and Hannah Haffenden was able to collect her first try for the club.
The last try came from a forceful break by Georgia Reed-Davies which was finished by Mole.
Heathfield’s dominance on the pitch was continued into the clubhouse afterwards when at the man of the match ceremony one of Heathfield players, best left anonymous for the sake of discretion, had finished her pint and was back in her chair while all the others were barely half way through.
The Heathfield coaches were delighted with the overall performance after a gap of three weeks and the team are looking forward optimistically to the upcoming games. These start next Sunday when they entertain Southampton in the first contest between the two clubs at any level (13 Oct 14.00)
