Heath’s U15s travelled to Brighton for their last league game of the season. On a bright and windy spring day these conditions were ideal for open, fast running rugby.
Heath, for the umpteenth time this season, were missing a couple of regular starters notably Kotz and Hallit together with Moverly-Smith and so it was a new midfield combination that took to the field. The match also saw Higgins moving to flank on the open side. In the last three games he’s now played in all three back row positions. Nothing like variety!
Brighton won the toss and chose to play with the fiercely strong wind behind them. This was a brilliant tactical decision as the wind alone was worth 20 to 30 points. From the kick off Heathfield were hemmed into their own half. The strong wind made it impossible to clear with any distance and so Heath were pegged back to their own 22. Inevitably the pressure told with Brighton’s flyhalf running through and scoring. From the kick off Brighton were soon back in Heath’s 22 through a combination of kicks and strong running by their back row forwards combining well with their backs and a further try was conceded.
From the kick off Heath won a scrum from a knock on. A slick switch move in the backs saw Watson cross the gain line. Quick ruck ball found it’s way out to MacVicker who rounded his opposite number and side stepped the full back to score under the posts. A try and conversion into the wind – fantastic, game on.
From the kick off Heath were soon pegged back into their 22 and Brighton scored again. Brighton’s fast direct running and slick passing was to serve them well throughout this match with several tries being scored by their lightning quick wingers.
A halftime it was 39 – 7.
Heath with the wind behind them were looking to hit back but with several injuries and illness affecting key players the great comeback was not to be. Brighton scored twice but Heath responded with the last score of the game. After some excellent tactical kicking by Robson put Brighton deep into their half. The backs ran it wide and quick ball found it’s way out to all three back row forwards in the midfield. Some delightful handling by Hobson, Cramp and Higgins put Buckland away to score in the corner – Top draw rugby!
