A warm, spring like day at the Cypress Field made for an entertaining match with both sides weakened by the loss of their top players to the county side. With Heath’s small squad and injury problems it meant they had to borrow 3 Lewes players but also saw the return of Hugh Whitlock and Tom Parr as well as the first outing for Matt.
Heath started promisingly with Ben Robson taking over fly half duties and launching the backs with Hugh and Shanners in the centres trying to dance their way through however, following a turnover and breakout of their own half the first score went to Lewes outwide in the corner.
Half time saw Heath down 17 – 5 but it could have been closer as Big Si, Heath’s skipper for the day, was inches from the line,
Callum Ridyard was Heath’s hero scoring two tries – one from a great no 8 pick up and run down the flank by James Higgins who off loaded to Callum to finish it off and his second came from a wonderful high cross-field kick by Robson, chased hard by Callum who caught it on the bounce. He then out sprinted the cover defense to score in the corner. Magic!
Heath’s final try came from strong forward play and a borrowed Lewes player charging over the line against his old team mates.
This match was played in really good spirit and Heath put up a really good fight considering many boys were playing in unfamiliar positions.
Many thanks to Lewes for making it a fair contest.
