Heathfield U15s demolish Chi

Heathfield U15s demolish Chi

Robert Woods3 Apr 2011 - 16:33

Hat trick hero, Lawrence MacVicker leads the the way as Heath win 64 - 7.

Heath’s under 15s wanted to give their Mum’s the best present they could on Mothering Sunday -that being playing the game of rugby as best they possibly could with a win - all players delivered on both accounts.
On a beautiful, warm, sunny spring day the crowd were treated to some wonderful running and passing rugby by Heath.

Unbelievably, we had virtually the same squad of players as the previous week , which meant no one played out of position, and today the team welcomed back Ryan Hughes.

Right from the kick off Heath took the game to Chichester with a catch and drive by Higgins and soon found themselves inside the Chi 22 following some neat handling in the backs. Lol gathered the ball off a ruck and beat several players to score under the posts, the first of 10 scored by Heath.

Heath soon dominated the rucks, were turning over the opposition in midfield and were winning scrums against the head so it was no surprise when another try soon followed scored by Callum Ridyard. Showing what a quality winger he is, he took the just inside the Chi half sprinted round his winger before darting back inside to beat two more players and score under the posts. Within minutes, after some excellent forward drives, Callum was soon in the same position again but this time he was caught 10 metres out but offloaded to the ever present Ollie Hobson who went over to score.

Heath maintained this relentless pressure throughout the first half and soon, after four phases of play Harry Foster side stepped the Chi midfield and accelerated away to score near the posts.
Half time and a very solid 28 – 0 with all tries being converted by Foster.

Heath were playing into the wind for the second half but straight from the kick off Lol pressured the opposition who fumbled the ball into his hands and he galloped away to score.

From the kick off Heath attacked again with the back row appearing the centres and making deep inroads into the Chi half. Quick ball down the blind saw a beautiful interplay of passing between Kotz and Overy to take out the cover defence and Kotz scored.

From the kick off again, quick ruck ball to Lol saw him scamper through the midfield and sprint away to score again and complete his hat trick. He should of had a fourth but the tearaway Higgins, running on Lol’s shoulder called for the ball, Lol duly offloaded and Higgins fell over the line or was it collapsed!

The next ten minutes saw a renewed determination by Chi and after some lax defending and offsides by Heath they were soon in Heath 22. Their big no 8 collected the ball and charged through the Heath midfield, shrugged off the Heath centres, beat the covering back row and with wingers, full back all tackling too high scored.

Heath’ u15s responded immediately and winning quick ball from a scrum, a fly half - centre switch sent Callum Hallit over the gain line and on to score.

There was a final score by Heath’s U15s when after several phases of play from the kick off and ball run wide by the backs, a dart down the blind by Kotz and Overy put Higgins in the clear and he out ran the defence to score.
So 10 tries in total and Harry Foster kicked wonderfully to convert 7 out of 10. The three misses coming from very difficult kicks out wide into the wind.

In summary, a very commanding performance by Heathfield, that’s two magnificent performances in two weeks with just one more home game against Hastings – you could hear the coaches & parents saying if only we started the season with this squad. That’s the challenge for next year!

The only concern being a very late knee injury to Callum H especially with Sussex next weekend. We hope he recovers quickly in time for Hastings.
