On a perfect day for rugby and a great 1st team pitch we saw a superb morning of rugby.
The game ebbed and flowed up and down the pitch for the full 70 mins. Uckfield taking the lead within the first 5mins which was countered by HWRFC with Jon scoring another classic wingers finish.
Uckfield then started to take the ascendency with some first class mauling and line breaks running in two tries before some impressive recycling of the ball allowed George to go over despite a very heavy tackle.
Uckfield continued their dominance either side of half time running in two more tries, the second being converted. This made the score 27-10. Led from the front Heathfield then started to dominate the breakdown and positional play from Tom at 10. From a well worked move from the forwards Ben picked an alternative short line to Sam Tiley who was able to turn and score. Tom then converted.
With Heathfield driving forward Captain Jack scored two tries from excellent phase ball by the whole team. Making the score 27-27.
Uckfield then countered with try.
With the breakdown now firmly with Heathfield, Uckfield defended manfully for long periods. Some quick thinking by Ben eventually breaking the deadlock and importantly scoring under the post. Tom's clean conversion pushed Heathfield ahead for the first time.
Uckfield then rallied once more with the Heathfield backs, led by Jon, hauling back a clean line break within metres of the touchline. Heathfield then defended some concerted Uckfield pressure with great discipline and commitment. Joe finally sealing the win with a kick to touch.
This game was a real credit to what U16 can deliver. Excitement, passion, skill and discipline. The game played in a great spirit with both teams having the discipline to take the intensity to the maximum and control it. Credit also to "Sir" who allowed an open game and added to the spectacle.
